Porcelain Laminate Treatments

Porcelain laminate veneers are dental prosthesis applications attached to the front surfaces of teeth. These prostheses, prepared in a laboratory environment, are adhered to the tooth surface to achieve the desired changes in cases where permanent color and shape changes are planned. This allows for the desired changes to be achieved by adjusting the teeth to the patient’s facial features and aesthetic expectations, which are of great importance in the formation of an aesthetic facial profile.

What Is the Difference Between Porcelain Laminate and Porcelain Crown?

In porcelain laminate treatment, only minimal abrasion on the front surface of the teeth is sufficient for the prosthesis to be made, allowing for a high preservation of healthy tooth tissues.

Since the abrasion process is very superficial, the possibility of pain and sensitivity during treatment is minimal. In some cases, the abrasion process can be completed without anesthesia. Porcelain crowns, on the other hand, are dental prostheses prepared to encase the entire surface of the tooth when more support from the tooth tissue is required. In these treatments, more abrasion is required on the tooth surface to prepare the material for attachment compared to porcelain laminates.

When Is Laminate Veneer Application Applied?

  • In cases where discoloration, shape deformities, and slight misalignment in the anterior teeth affect smile aesthetics negatively,
  • In cases where the aesthetics are disrupted due to decay formation in the anterior teeth or large-volume old fillings,
  • In cases where patients with gaps between their teeth desire the closure of the gap without undergoing orthodontic treatment,
  • To repair tooth tissue losses due to breakage or wear in cases where laminate restoration is suitable,
  • In individuals who are not satisfied with the aesthetic properties of their teeth,
  • When it is planned to lengthen the teeth without performing gum aesthetics procedures.

When Is Porcelain Laminate Treatment Not Preferred?

There are several instances where porcelain laminate treatment may not be the preferred option:

  1. Presence of Bad Habits: Individuals who have habits such as teeth clenching, teeth grinding, nail biting, or pen biting can exert excessive stress on their teeth. These habits can lead to rapid deformation of prostheses. Additionally, patients with abnormal jaw relationships may experience disproportionate distribution of loads on the teeth, which can negatively affect the lifespan of the prosthesis. In such cases, it’s essential to address the underlying causes of these habits and correct any negative conditions in the oral cavity before considering porcelain laminate treatment.
  2. Damage to Enamel Tissue: Diseases that cause damage to the protective layer of enamel tissue can affect the success of porcelain laminate treatment. The amount and quality of tissue on the tooth surface where the prosthesis is to be attached may not provide the necessary surface properties for the adhesion of porcelain laminates. Therefore, it’s crucial to ensure the integrity of the enamel tissue before proceeding with this treatment.
  3. Excessive Tooth Discoloration: In cases where there is excessive discoloration on the teeth to be treated, it may not be possible to completely mask all these colors with porcelain laminate treatments. As a result, achieving ideal aesthetic properties in treatment may be challenging. In such situations, dental prostheses with lower light transmission may be considered as an alternative for a more aesthetically pleasing outcome.

How Are Porcelain Laminate Treatments Performed?

During the initial examination, the suitability of the teeth planned for porcelain laminate treatment is evaluated through a detailed intraoral examination. Porcelain laminate treatment is usually completed within a short period of 2-3 sessions. However, this process may vary depending on the number of teeth to be treated and their general condition. Before the treatment session, impressions of the teeth are taken without any intervention on the teeth, and the design features of the planned treatment are created based on these impressions.

In cases where the trial process is suitable, a mold is prepared based on the design model, allowing the design prepared to be tried on the patient’s teeth before any intervention on the teeth. If the trial stage is successful, preparation is made on the front surfaces of the relevant teeth for the porcelain laminate prostheses to fit.

Although these abrasions are generally completed without feeling pain, anesthesia can be applied if necessary to completely eliminate the possibility of pain during the procedure. After the abrasion, a new impression is taken to transfer the final state of the teeth to the porcelain laminate design. Then, temporary laminate prostheses are placed on the teeth to maintain the aesthetic and functional properties. Thus, any tooth sensitivity that may occur between treatment sessions is also eliminated.

When the permanent porcelain laminates are prepared, their compatibility with the teeth is checked, and when ideal fit is observed, the prostheses are adhered to the tooth surface using special permanent adhesives. Following the daily oral and dental care routine is sufficient for the maintenance of porcelain laminates.
